The Sugar Chic is Melissa Chicarelli, lover of all things sugar.
From a family of chefs, Melissa was surrounded by amazing food, but was always on the lookout for the perfect dessert. Dinner at a restaurant always ended with a thorough evaluation of the dessert menu, followed by her well-known quote,
"there's always room for dessert!". Whether it be cake or pie, ice-cream or gelato,
Melissa would order, sample, share, then judge them all!
This passion led to many adventures including a cupcake "crawl", when in a single day she stopped at no fewer than 9 storefronts and sampled as many creations as possible, once again critiquing every single bite! And forget about being anywhere near a spot
where a "famous" cookie is made,
if it takes two subways, a cab ride and/or a 15 block walk,
Melissa will make a detour a must!
Melissa started designing cakes for friends and family ocassions, becoming the highlight of their events. So after enrolling and completing a Baking and Pastry Arts program at the Culinary Academy of Long Island in 2002,
she realized her true calling. A career in baking was in her future.
She continued perfecting her recipes, attended seminars at
The French Culinary Institute and started building her dream!
In 2007 a friend asked for a custom favor for her wedding. Melissa's infamous
"wedding cake" cookie became a staple in her repertoire,
sparking a business and life changing decision
- leaving her fulltime job in HR and creating The Sugar Chic in 2008!
As of the new year 2011, Melissa started a food, dessert
and personal experience blog called the honeybee chronicles.
